Hurricane Florence 2018...and then Michael

I grew up in Tornado Alley, so I'm fairly well-versed in tornado safety protocol, but it wasn't until I moved to North Carolina that I learned a bit about hurricane season. We're about 3 hours from the coast. Three hours isn't super close but is close enough that we are affected by hurricanes. This year, hurricane season has been a bit more hyped and a bit more aggressive than in previous years.

Back in September, Hurricane Florence was headed directly for the North Carolina coast. We knew about it a week and a half before it was set to make landfall (note: this is a big difference between hurricanes and tornadoes! With hurricanes, you get warning! Like, more than mere minutes!). It was in the news constantly. Friends and family near and far checked in regularly. People were evacuating right and left, as the projected path of the storm was headed right toward the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill). Meteorologists were predicting that our area would have massive numbers of downed trees and power outages. The governor issued mandatory evacuations for the coastal areas. School, churches, institutions were canceling classes, services, and programming. The grocery stores were cleaned out, as were gas stations (I sat in line at a pump for almost 20 minutes). It was insane how palpable the panic was.

Brad and I- after much consideration- opted to stay in Durham. We made all sorts of plans and preparations and were as ready as we could be. Because everything was canceled, the girls were all home full-time and going a bit stir-crazy. But we were ready!

And then almost NOTHING happened.

The storm turned and curved south, and when I say "almost NOTHING happened," I mean that we barely even got any rain. It was a little surreal how much didn't happen. So weird. But please look at this picture I snapped really quickly when I ducked into a crazy-pants crowded Target to pick up bananas and diapers as part of our prep:

And this was a fairly well-stocked aisle.

This was literally the very last bunch of bananas left in the store. They were almost neon green.

After 10 days of stress and chaos and prepping and evacuating, everything was all set to return to normal...until Monday morning. Out of almost nowhere (as they do), tornadoes came through. We rarely get tornadoes here, and y'all, the sirens in our part of town do not work. Of all the people to mess with regarding tornado sirens- why me, Durham? Thankfully, Brad and Claire had not yet left for school drop off. Claire's school was able to cancel before the school day started (all our girls spent time in the coat closet). The public school system, though, had already started running buses and were unable to cancel school...so everyone in the public schools spent several hours in the hallways. I felt really awful for the kids and teachers and all the parents who couldn't get to their children. I would have been losing my mind. The School Board caught a lot of flack for not canceling, but (somewhat) in their defense, they'd already canceled two days of school when we ended up having no weather, only to have tornadoes (and associated flooding) come out of nowhere. What were they supposed to do?

Speaking of flooding, we had several friends who had pretty significant flooding around their houses (rain + creeks rising), causing varying levels of damage that took quite a bit of time to sort out. Thankfully, our home is situated fairly high(ish) and on an incline, so we were spared the flooding, although nearby surrounding areas were covered in water for several hours.

A few hours after the weather subsided on our tornado morning, the girls were begging to go outside, since they'd been cooped up for days.

They were excited at first but came back in pretty quickly because the humidity was so thick and oppressive. Poor girls.

We built a lot of forts while we were waiting for Florence, and the biggies decided Brynna needed one, too. Thankfully, Brynnie is a good sport.

Nearly a month later, Hurricane Michael came through. We had no hype about it. No chaos. Just rain in the forecast.

Um, guys. SO MUCH RAIN. And wind. But the rain! It rained so much and made the ground so soft that tons of trees fell, knocking out power all over the place. We, mercifully, did not lose power, although it flickered quite a bit, and I was very concerned about a tree behind our house that was swaying more than I was comfortable with. I checked in with lots of friends, and most of them had lost power. It took one set of friends longer than 24 hours to get it back. The day after the intense rain was beautiful and sunny. Claire had a dental appointment, and as we were driving there, I was shocked at just how many traffic lights were out. After her appointment, we stopped by Target to pick up some groceries, and EVERYTHING from the refrigerated sections were gone. They'd lost power for longer than 12 hours and had to throw it all out.

Michael, that had garnered zero hype or fuss, ended up causing much more trouble for us than Florence, which caused very little trouble but so much panic. It was all a very good reminder that a) weather is unbelievably powerful and b) we cannot control it.

And now we're thankful for some cooler temperatures!

We have a Kindergartener. And a dancer.

This is about 6 weeks belated, but y'all. We have a KINDERGARTENER. How did that happen? Oh my goodness. (<--- am I going to be saying this every year until she graduates?)

She could not possibly have been more excited for school to start back. We kept her at the same small school this year where she attended preschool last year. It's still a half-day program, which was exactly what I wanted. When I went for the parents' open-house night before the first day of school, I wasn't quite sure what to think when we all filed into the classroom, and the teacher said, "Is Claire's Mommy here?"

Oh, dear heavens.

I raised my hand ever-so-tentatively (because that question could have been leading just anywhere, you know?).

"Hi! Ok, I just wanted to let you know that, as of right now, and please remember this can absolutely change...Claire is the only girl in our class."

I kinda laughed a little because OF COURSE this would happen. My very girly-girl would end up in a classroom full of boys and no other girls (there were 8 children total, so don't imagine 1 Claire and 20 boys or anything). But, what can you do?

"There's a little girl who will probably be joining us in November, though! And Claire might really love being in a room of all boys. We had this situation a few years ago, and our little girl had those boys whipped into shape in no time!"

Oh, no doubt that would be Claire's situation. She's FOR SURE a take-charge kind of girl.

Several of the other parents made a point to come and tell me that their little boys adored their gal pals and would be thrilled to befriend Claire. It was very kind. I knew that she would be fine, but I was just really not looking forward to having to tell her.

I broke the news as carefully as possible, couching it with as many fun ideas as I could, and she handled it pretty well. But it continued to settle in slowly over the next few hours, and we had to discuss it at length. We were still talking about it at bedtime, so I suggested she pray about it and ask the Lord for a friend. Which she did. Very earnestly.

And on the first day of school, I got a text from Claire's teacher that one of Claire's little girlfriends from preschool had registered to be in the class that very morning. I got to tell Claire that her friend would be there- and that God had heard her prayer. To say she was excited would seriously understate the situation. She made up a song about it and sang it for 20 minutes.

I'm happy to say that she is doing very well, loves everyone in her class, and is having a really great school year so far.

On another note, Claire also started dance lessons this semester! It's not exactly ballet; the class is called "Discovering Movement," and it is so cute. She's loving it! Lily, being too young for the class per the guidelines (though she can actually do the moves she sees the instructor do better than 75% of the actual students), is just beside herself with envy and longing. It's so hard to watch. I didn't realize it would be so hard on her (although I should have realized, let's be honest). I'm hoping to get Lily in some kind of class next year. I don't have a lot of pictures because I usually just take video, but here are a few- clearly well composed- shots of our dancing girl.

Claire's ballet instructor very sweetly lets younger siblings participate at the very end of each class. That's Lily in the pink shirt, a little left of center.

So, this is where we are in life with our firstborn, who, BY THE WAY, was a baby last week. Don't even argue with me about this.

Proud of you, Bearsy!

Letter to my Baby Brynn: 5 Months

Brynnie,

Well, you did it again. You just burned through another month. YOU HAVE TO SLOW DOWN! I'm loving all of your little days and watching all your little ways. One of my very favorite things about you is your determination to be as happy as you can (for the most part- cars are a different story). Even when you are overwhelmingly tired and can't seem to hold back the tears, you smile as much as you are physically capable of. It's precious and heartbreaking and so very endearing. I definitely have to kiss your sweet little face every time that happens.

You had several big moments this month! Namely, you started really rolling and got yourself semi-stuck under the entertainment center. I left the room for 60 seconds and came back to find you half under the entertainment center, despite having left you in the middle of the room. I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN IF I PUT YOU DOWN. And I was right. I absolutely should have just kept holding you full time...

You also tried your first solid food this month (on October 2)! We were eating some avocado and decided to offer you some. You really liked it! Of course, like most babies, it took you a few tries to figure out how to keep it in your mouth, but you did and enjoyed it. Way to go!

A couple of not-so-fun things happened this month, too, namely Hurricane Florence and your first bee sting. Hurricane Florence hit the Carolina coasts and sent lots of horrible weather across the state. We were very fortunate that we only got heavy rains in our part of Durham, but for about a week, everyone was preparing for the impending storm and worrying about what might happen. It was a rather stressful atmosphere, and the gas stations and grocery stores were very empty, but we had a fun time playing and spending time together while everything around town was cancelled (on the tail end of the hurricane, we had several tornado warnings that were actually much more dramatic than the previous week, but we didn't have much fun with that part).

On Daddy's birthday, we went to Duke Gardens to hang out with friends and eat cake. While I was helping serve cake, you were stung by a bee. It was awful! You were crying. I was crying...and you tried to be so brave and smile through your tears. I was very proud of you, you brave girl.

Very rarely do you do anything other than happily exist, but you are not a fan of being strapped in your car seat if you are tired or hungry. You often cry on the way home from picking up Claire from school or dance, but outside of that, you don't fuss much at all. I am extremely grateful. Almost everyone who meets you comments that you are just "such a happy baby." They could not be more correct.

I am just so thankful you, my little sunshine girl.
Love,
Mommy

You love spending time with your sisters. Lily is so active, though, that moments like these are fairly rare, but you love them.

Claire does this almost every day.

Claire decorated us with stickers.

Beauty.

This is one of my favorite pictures of all time ever.

The beginnings of your rolling adventures...

While we waited on Hurricane Florence, we built a lot of living room forts. Naturally, your sisters thought you needed one, as well.

SO happy for sister hangs.

Your resting face. The happiest.

LILY-ISMS: September 2018 edition

She's back at it, y'all! Enjoy this last month's LILY.

That loud! My ears!
Brynna was crying and, apparently, assaulting Lily's ears.

Lily was having a hard time playing nicely with some play date friends, so she relocated to quietly watch Curious George upstairs with Daddy.

Where's my friend Mommy?
She was asking Brad about my whereabouts.

I naked a wittle bit.
She was wearing a diaper.

Poppy's a he-rio!
Hero

Don't worry. I gotchu.

Can I pet Brynnie?

I wost my Claire friend...
This was heartbreaking. On Claire's first day of school, Lily kept crying and saying that she lost Claire. I could barely handle it.

Hi, I Wiwwy. Dis Mommy. Dis Daddy. Dis my new fwiend Claire and my new fwiend Brynnie Boo Boo.
She very adorably introduces everyone in all circumstances, whether or not everyone already knows everyone else.

Have my zert!
I'd like my dessert, please.

Lily's face...

Claire, shhhh! I talking to Mommy.

Claire, I wub your hair!
Claire I love your hair!

...and again...

Nakey chip: her toy chipmunk
I have no idea why her little toy chipmunk is "nakey chip." The only thing I can come up with is that the chipmunk is not wearing any people clothes...?

Oh wow! That's 'mazing! That berry awesome!

Treasure stash

I mad!
Stomps foot, hands on hips

Pack purse : Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse
It's a book.

I Cwuwewwa.
The girls love 101 Dalmatians, and apparently, they've been paying attention. I'd let Lily paint one day, and the next morning, she came up to me, introducing herself as Cruella, and holding the paintbrush as Cruella's long cigarette holder. With ALL THE SASS.

Ooohh...I yook boo-full.
She was dressed to the nines.

Tur-mado : tornado

*runs and hides from a diaper change*
Mommy! I back here!

I make boots.
I looked over at her during supper, and she had put two pieces of chopped-up hot dogs on two of her fork tines. She made "boots" for her fork.

I bad guy this time.

'Motes, Mommy.

To a collection of her toys.
I gotchu, baby.

*Waves hands enthusiastically in the air*
Oh! Assist-a-cats! Me me me!
Assist-a-cats: Aristocats

Lily: (hand on hip) No, Mommy. I Punnell.
Punnell: Rapunzel

Around here lately: September 2018 edition

Please enjoy this September installment, friends.

Where's that little super hero guy? (Blue devil mascot at the Duke football game) He breaks my heart when he leaves.

Go Duke!

Shaking a shaker is a way of clapping.
At the football game.

She held her shaker over my head, mimicking longer hair.
You have some glorious hair!

This is dead fish that somebody killed.
Commenting on her supper from Captain D's. She wasn't wrong.

Claire: Is Nana sleeping?
Poppy: I think so.
Claire: Well, so far, so good.

Peg is the one who examples me to make a diagram.
Referring to Peg from the kid show "Peg + Cat," which I recommend, by the way. It's a FUN show about MATH.

Aunt Nellie is a little friend we got to see in Alabama.
Aunt Nellie is our 94-year-old great-aunt.

Brynna has a sticker on her head and Claire has something in her mouth. #weclassy

No, this isn't pretend. This is REAL LIFE, Mommy.

Pastor asking the children a question at the front of the church, prior to children's church: Have you ever had to wait for something?
Claire: I did yesterday! My Nana told me I had to wait to watch Superbook.

Mr. Potato Guy = Mr. Potato Head

There's a fork and knife in the road.
A fork in the road.

Here goes nuffin'!
Turning into the school parking lot on visiting day.

I've been waiting for this day!
Starting back to school

It feels so good to be back!
In the middle seat of Brad's car v. the back row of the van. We had moved her car seat to the back row while we traveled this summer and had just never gotten her moved back...

*Lots of hard-to-follow chatter that I primarily tuned out while driving*
Does that sound reasonable, Mommy?

Brad: Tastes can change as you grow up.
Claire: That sounds reasonable.
Brad: What have I done to you? (referring to her judgement of reasonableness)
Claire: You haven't done anything to me, Daddy!

If my ballet shoes get dirty, you can bathe them.

Looks like she's really getting along with it!
Referring to Brynn and a baby toy.

I miss home so much when I'm gone, and I just have to hug stuff when I get back.
And she does.

Erin: You don't have to talk all the time at school, ok?
Claire: I don't! I just answer when they ask questions!
I'm confident there is more to this answer.

The birthday boy = what she continually called Parker from school, as she could NOT remember his name but knew he'd had a birthday on the 2nd day of school

She really is such a great big sister.

Leo-dard: Leotard

Lily: I need zert!
Brad: What is zert?
Claire: You know what zert is! It's a sugary thing that you get to eat after you eat your supper!

The amaze: a maze in an activity book

That's my heading way!
I'm heading that way.

Is the game about pushing people over?
Referring to football. She's not wrong.

She's just dragging the Thomas tent with her, which is just ridiculous.
Lily was hauling a Thomas the Train pop-up tent around the living room, bumping into everything.

It's foggy, but it shall be sunny later.

Referring to food I made.
Is it better than it looks?

When you run out of space while writing your name and just go ahead and wrap it around.

Jesus and God work together as a little team.

Look, Lily, it's Bom Bom! Mommy, I called it that so it wouldn't break your heart.
Lily used to call Monster's Inc. "Bom Bom," and Claire knew I had been sad when she stopped. So, she thought she'd ease my pain by trying to revive it.

Lily: Dat Jesus.
Claire: No, that's the star of Jesus.
Erin: Actually, that's the sky over the Disney castle...
Intro to a Disney movie...

We have to teach Brynnie everything in the world, and that is NOT going to be easy.

Children love their mommies, especially, because they lived inside of them.

Claire: Is it gone?
*pause*
Erin: Are you talking about Brynn's spit up?
Claire: Yes. I can't watch until it's gone.
#diva

I like it when you sit next to each other. I'm glad you're wife and husband.
To Brad and me when she came down after nap and we were sitting together on the couch.

My feet is just loving you, Mommy.
When I asked why she kept putting her feet on me at the table.

Pretend play with Lily
Claire: Dr. Lily! Do you have a place for us to stay??
Lily: Yeah!
Claire: Oh, thank heaven.
Lily: They're safe here. (referring to the gigantic stuffed bears Claire handed her)

To me
I'm going to the *insert somewhere I can't remember* when I'm a grown-up. You'll still be alive.

Nana is a good finder. She finds fun things for us.

That pretzel fing: a peace sign

The containment center: the entertainment center (which, incidentally, contains a lot of things)

Watching the weather during Hurricane Florence
I'm just really into the weather.

Will you send a message to the Tooth Fairy that I want to keep my teeth when I lose them?
Keep the lost teeth, as well as her money

Claire: Who's this? (a card from the invitation to our friend, Chris's, ordination as a Catholic priest. We keep it as our prayer prompt for him, among our stack of Christmas cards from friends that we pray through at meal times.)
Erin: That's our friend, Mr. Chris. Well, that's his card. The picture is supposed to be of Jesus. Mr. Chris is a priest.
Claire: Oh. Does he work for Jesus?

Sees a VW Beetle
That car is SO handsome!

We're blocked by those traffic.

I'm just doing blueberries on Brynnie's tummy.
Raspberries

Dusty Crophopper number 2!
Planes: Fire and Rescue (Pixar movie)

Claire: What happened to Cad?(character from Planes)
Erin: He got fired.
Claire: They put him in the fire??
Erin: No, he lost his job... Oh! I get it! No, they did not put him in the forest fire.
Part of the storyline involves a forest fire, and it seems that she was afraid that the shady character was put into the fire because of his bad behavior. Bless her.

You know, it's nice to just chat with you.
To me.

Mommy, I think you have the most special-est kids in North Carolina.

Brynnie just said the sweetest sound!

My tower is going to be MAGNIFICENT!

Sees a picture of a fruit stand that Amiee sent us from her travels.
Oooooh! A vegetable fest!

Boswell beach trip 2022: part 1

Just another friendly reminder that I'm still playing catch-up. Clearly, it is not currently July... We made another annual trip to Tops...
