Reflecting on the Challenge

Warning: Yet another lengthy post.

Short version: We finished the Challenge. It was great.

Long version:

I realize that we're a month and a half into 2013, so reflecting on my 2012 challenge is basically old news. I'm just taking my time in the blogging sphere, apparently.

However, I do want to write a little on Amiee's and my clothing challenge from last year. Here's the original post from last January, where I explained our rules. Over the past year, we successfully accomplished most of our goals (although we're a bit slow in finishing up posting the completed projects. Oops.).

In essence, our primary goals were to learn gratitude for what we have, practice frugality, and make decisions about what is essential to our wardrobes and what can be repurposed. This whole project originally started with me; Brad was in the middle of applying for graduate schools, and I knew, based on all the places to which he was applying, that I would need to start thinking about how we could downsize a bit. Most of the schools are located in larger cities where we would probably be living in apartments with far less storage than our awesome house in Jackson (how correct was I??). So, the idea of spending a year of not buying anything new started percolating in my mind. I figured it would only be beneficial.

I mentioned it to Amiee, and she was very supportive of my decision. You know...for me. That would be crazy for her. Except for the fact that once I'd mentioned it, it started percolating in her mind, too. Right near the end of 2011, she sent me a text saying that she wanted to join me in not buying anything for 2012 (We called it "No Buy 2012" among ourselves. We actually did a mini-version of this challenge in July 2011, and we called it "No Buy July," which sounds cooler than "No Buy 2012." We just weren't creative enough to come up with another moniker to rhyme with 2012.)

I was super excited. I knew it would be easier to stick to my guns if I had someone else in on it with me. However, I did start thinking about our personality differences; I'm much more inclined to walk past the cute $5 t-shirts at Target while Amiee is magnetically pulled into their force field. I realized really quickly that this plan had the potential to be almost physically painful for Amiee when a good deal crossed her path. I started scratching my head to come up with a way to make the whole process more interesting. That's when I stumbled across Disneybound boards on Pinterest. I knew Amiee would love it.

So, I pulled up some of the boards and showed them to her. Of course, she adored them. I suggested that we set ourselves a weekly challenge of using what we have to create our own character outfits. She was sold. She immediately started putting outfits together and had about 18 before I had even one. Thus, the challenge was born.

Some weeks were much easier than others. Some character outfits had us itching with excitement to wear them and others were just sort of "meh...gotta have an outfit, so I guess this will do." We actually ended 2011 by sorting through our clothes and accessories, making piles of things we knew we were going to get rid of anyway. We went through each other's discard piles to see if there was anything we wanted/needed for specific characters and then donated the rest to a local charity thrift store. Mom got in on the Challenge, too, giving us some awesome accessories for Christmas that we could use throughout the year (some might call her an enabler...we call her awesome.).

The Challenge changed a bit for me when I found out that I was pregnant. Obviously, I was going to have to acquire some new clothing before the year was up. Side note: that's actually how I broke the news to Amiee. I told her that I had bad news: I wasn't going to be able to finish the Challenge...because I'd need maternity clothes (which was good news)! She bounced around the house. Literally bounced. I know...all of y'all who know her are so shocked, right? Anyway, I did try to stick to the spirit of the Challenge when adding maternity clothes to my closet. I have exactly three pairs of maternity pants: casual jeans, dressier jeans, and a pair of black pants. I have a black maternity skirt and 3 pairs of yoga pants (which I don't wear out of the house- they're mostly pajama bottoms for me). Those are all of the bottoms I have.

As for tops, I straight-up purchased a few (but all were bought using a coupon or coupon code, gotten off the "as-is" rack in Maine, were gifts, or were bought with a Belk gift card left over from our wedding), but I don't have just tons of them. I have 4 long-sleeved solid-colored shirts, 4 short sleeved, 4 sweaters, 2 camisoles, and a pajama top. Thankfully, for a really long time (until about months 5 and 6), I was still able to wear a lot of my regular tops, too. I also already had a lot of cardigans and such that I can layer over the maternity tops that I do have. So helpful.

Despite having that additional hurdle, I think we did pretty well with our goals. Amiee was definitely the winner, though. Her outfits were far more stellar, and she was actually able to complete the Challenge in its entirety. Hopefully, she'll have time to blog her thoughts on it sometime soon; she has some great things to say about it. And, we had a good time with it. Doing it together and having the added "character" element did a lot to make it interesting and fun. I got tickled the other day when Amiee called me to "confess" that she'd made a clothing purchase at Target (to replace a pair of older pants that she'd discarded at the end of the Challenge). We've definitely changed in our mindset to buying things. We deliberate more and really evaluate the necessity of something before going for it. I count that as a positive outcome, though. We end up with clothes we really love and keep money in our pockets by not making purchases on a whim.

It's not a challenge that's sustainable year after year, but we have talked about doing it again in a year or two. Just to make sure we keep our perspectives in place. I'll probably keep you posted. :)

To wrap it up, I thought I'd post some of my favorite outfits, just for fun. You'll probably be seeing a lot less of my sartorial choices from here on out.

Beast. When I wore this to work, the ladies in my office just went on and on about how cute I was and that I should be a character every day. It made me wonder what I looked like to them on a regular basis...

Gaston. Not sure why I liked this one so much, but I did.

Fawkes (from Harry Potter). I loved the colors in this one. I also just love Fawkes. He's such a good phoenix. Dumbledore is lucky to have him.

Siamese cats. I liked doing this one with Amiee. So fun.

Meg. I liked this one because I got to wear shiny, sparkly gold things. Also, given the fact that I'm currently 8 months pregnant, I like being reminded that I used to fit in regular clothes.

Eloise. I just love Eloise. I definitely wore this to church.

Snow White. I liked this one because several of my students came in and immediately knew who I was. It was so fun.
And, Rapunzel. I loved this one, not because of what I wore, but because of what Brad and Amiee wore to humor me:

Flynn Rider, Rapunzel, and Pascal. They love me. They really do.
I hope you've enjoyed my musings on clothing over the past year. I'm not really much of a fashionista, so I find it funny that I wrote about clothing at least once a week. I'm so glad Amiee and I did it; we learned so much and had a great time. Perhaps I'll do a baby version soon. We'll see...

The Final Challenge

Well, I've finally gotten around to finishing up the very last bit of my 2012 Challenge. I really feel a bit sad typing that out. Amiee and I got way behind on posting there at the end of the year; so, I'm just now getting it all finished, and I know that Amiee is wrapping up picture editing/writing characters up, too.

Before I get off on my thoughts throughout the Challenge and what's up next, I really should give this one its fair share of air time. Here's the last picture:

My goal was that musical, native American princess...

Pocahontas. Pocahontas, while never a particular favorite of mine, makes me think of three things immediately:
1. The summer that the move came out and all of the candy that Nestle made in a Pocahontas theme. Does anyone else remember the chocolate bars and sweet tarts? They came out the summer before my family moved overseas, so it's rather etched in my mind.
2. My bff, Kat. If she was forced to be a Disney princess, she would be Pocahontas.
3. My friend/college roommate, Molly. There was this one day that we had gone to get dinner (Moe's, I think), and we were listening to Disney songs in her car on the way back (we're cool...we know). We got back to campus, but we weren't finished singing "The Colors of the Wind," so we just drove around campus until we finished the song. Do you even remember that, Mols?

Anyway, here's the breakdown:

Character: Pocahontas from Pocahontas

Outfit:
*Sweater was purchased with a leftover Belk gift card (leftover from our wedding) in 2012.
* White t-shirt is a maternity shirt that my aunt picked up for me for a couple of dollars at her local thrift store.
*Belt came from Francesca's in Huntsville...2011?
*Necklace was a gift from Kyleigh for my birthday last year.
*Jeans are one of my three pairs of maternity pants. I got them for almost nothing off the "as-is" rack at Motherhood Maternity in Kittery, ME.

Disneybound inspiration board:

Perhaps I'll be able to put together a coherent wrap-up post by the end of this week. We'll see how that pans out... I think I got pretty close to the inspiration board in this particular outfit. Thoughts?

Hope you all had a happy Monday.

The But You HAVE Heard Of Me Challenge

I realize that 2012 is officially over, and January 2013 is pretty close to being over. However, I have every intention of finishing the clothing challenge. I just got a little off-course with Christmas traveling, so I'm finishing up now. I'm behind by two outfits, so this is one of the two remaining.

My title might have given a little tip-off on this week's character. He's Disney, but he's not a cartoon.

Captain Jack Sparrow! I went a little lighter on my eye liner than he does, and my hair is a little more...um...clean? Something along those lines.

Character: Captain Jack Sparrow from The Pirates of the Caribbean

Outfit:
*Black top is a maternity top from Target.
*White over-thing is from Papaya from 2010 (pre-baby).
*Scarf was a gift from a friend/former Spanish profesora, Senora Romine!
*Jeans are also maternity from Target (I have exactly three pairs of maternity pants that aren't yoga pants. They get worn a LOT. I'll be really happy to retire them eventually.).
*I'm even wearing black boots...you just can't see them. They're Clark's from about 4 years ago.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I really liked this outfit; I had gotten into a pretty deep maternity clothing rut, so just pulling out the white thing and the scarf changed my perspective drastically. Who knew?

One character left! I'm so sad that our little challenge is ending. I'll write up my reflections on it soon!

The Knight in Shiny Earrings

I obviously didn't have a great title for this one... I was definitely reaching.

I've discovered that the majority of the pieces in my maternity wardrobe are of the black/white/gray/red/camel color variety. Surprisingly, I haven't really tired of much of it (minus the two pairs of pants that I rotate between). So, engineering what characters I can pull off is limited to what character boards I can find that fit into that color palate. I realize that makes it a little less interesting, but I've got to work with what I have, right?

I found this board just recently and realized how easily I could pull it off. I wore it to the hospital today for my rhogam injection (incidentally, we were gone from home for 3 hours for this little injection. Oi. Upside: the nurse that administered it reminded us of our friend's mom, which was fun.). Unfortunately, it was just Brad and me that could appreciate my effort.

Here goes:

I know; it's not terribly ornate, but come on...I'm a little limited. And, my internal temperature is ridiculously high these days, restricting the clothing I can wear.

Here's my goal:

Prince Phillip. The dragon-slayer.

Character: Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty

Outfit:
*Black cami (maternity) from Old Navy this year.
*Sweater was a hand-me-down from my great-grandmother. I'm going vintage, y'all.
*Shiny earrings ("iron-clad"...much like a sword that would be wielded by a dashing prince. That works, right?)

Disneybound inspiration board:

I think I got pretty close. Boring, though it may be. :) Just a few more weeks to go with this year's challenge. Maybe- just maybe- we'll have another year's worth of challenge up our sleeves. We'll just have to see.

The Witch Doctor Challenge

I'm once again venturing into the realm of Challenge 2012: Maternity Edition. I put this outfit together the other night before going to our neighborhood group from church, but I actually ended up tweaking it a bit before leaving the house. The outfit in the picture made me look rounder than I really wanted to, so I changed a few things and ended up looking more my actual size. Vanity...I know. I just didn't want to look last stages pregnant when I'm only 6 months (I realize that's hyperbole). I'm awful.

My character this week was:

Rafiki. I sort of accidentally ended up with a Lion King theme running through the last few outfits. Apparently they work best for maternity outfits?

Character: Rafiki from The Lion King

Outfit:
*White cami from Old Navy (maternity).
*Gray sweater from Belk (maternity).
*Gold belt from NY & Co. 2010.
*Red earrings from Ukraine 2009.
*African beaded necklace gift from parents after trip to Rwanda a couple years ago.

Disneybound inspiration board:

So far, so good on the maternity challenge pictures. I only have to come up with a few more. I'm feeling confident. Just out of curiosity...any of you that have seen all of the challenge outfits this year, any favorites? Amiee and I are getting a tad bit nostalgic now that we're nearing the end, and I was wondering if our favorites are similar to yours. By the way, Amiee's going to play catch-up on updating her blog...once she finishes finals. Go, Amiee! Ace those tests!

The Bird Beak Challenge

I'm being vulnerable with this picture, y'all. It's not terribly flattering of me and particularly makes me face look fuller than I'd like. Can we say it's the angle? (and pretend it's not actually my face?) I'm not really a baby-bump-photo-taker, so I'm not crazy about pictures of myself currently. I have, thus far, not found pregnancy to agree with me very much- whether in health or image, so there's a lack of photographic evidence in general. Does that make me a bad person?

When I realized I was running out of my pre-baby belly pictures, I frantically began searching both my scanty maternity wardrobe and Disneybound for characters I could scrounge up. Tricky, tricky. However, I think I came up with a few that I can pull together in the next few weeks.

Here's my first attempt:

Amiee has already done this one, and our two takes on this character are definitely different and varied. Incidentally, the picture of us on her post was taken just a couple hours before Brad and I told her about Baby Boswell (and she bounced around the house for a few minutes in her excitement.). Our guiding light for this challenge:

Zazu! Poor Zazu...he only wants to help, and Simba just makes fun of him. And doesn't listen. And gets in trouble. Oh, Simba. If only you'd listened to Zazu's wise counsel...

Character: Zazu from The Lion King

Outfit:
*Blue shirt is from NY & Co. and is actually not maternity. Just stretchy.
*Cami is maternity and is from Old Navy (I have one in white and one in black, and they are pretty much worn daily.).
*Yellow sweater was a hand-me-down from Mary Ellen.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I have no idea what maternity character will be next, but I promise to come up with something. It definitely ups the "challenge" factor. And, let's all pretend that my face isn't as full as it looks, ok?

The Out-of-Control Hair Challenge

No...this is not another Rapunzel challenge. And, yes, this should have been posted last Friday. Remember how I was in Alabama? (and yes, there is internet in Alabama...I was just busy with other things.)

Anyway, this is the last of the pre-baby-belly pictures that I squeezed in. I'm working on a few final outfits that are in my "maternity wear." I really should do a post sometime about how I've really avoided buying too much maternity wear. I've gotten pretty creative. But I digress.

Outfit:

This character goes along with my last character that I posted:

I was Merida, daughter of Queen Elinor. You know, minus the over-the-top hair. Interestingly enough, I have two really good friends (Kat and Amanda) who have hair that will do this naturally if left untamed. They're not redheads, though. It's really pretty fascinating to see.

Character: Merida from Brave

Outfit:
*Blue top from Ross...2010 maybe?
*Scarf from the Handbag and Jewelry outlet waaaaay back when. I don't remember exactly, but I was in high school.
*White cami from NY & Co. 2008.

Disneybound inspiration board:

Starting this coming Friday, we'll be in "real time" with the character pictures. I've found a few outfits that I can pull together with my current wardrobe. Here's hoping I can make it to the end of December!

The Bearly Queen Challenge

This is another of the outfits I did back in August before we announced anything about Baby Boswell. Even though the picture looks like I might be showing, I actually still wasn't showing; the button/zipper of the skirt created that little illusion. Here's my character:

Brad and I went to see this gal in the theater in Humboldt shortly before we left Jackson. (For non-West-Tennesseans, Humboldt is a little small town about 15 minutes outside of Jackson, and their movie theater is in the cutest little downtown. It has exactly three screens, and the same family seems to work the ticket counter and concessions stand. We. Loved. It.) This was my goal:

Queen Elinor. Voiced by Emma Thompson who plays a different Elinor in Sense and Sensibility. I think that fact made me like Queen Elinor right off the bat.

Character: Queen Elinor from Brave

Outfit:
*Green top from NY & Co. 2010.
*Gold belt from NY & Co. 2011.
*Brown skirt from Wal-Mart 2009.

Disneybound inspiration board:

How fun. I only wish I had a fancy tiara to go with it.

The Metamorphing Challenge

I probably should have done this one way back in the beginning of the year when I did a theme month that she would have belonged in. I didn't, though.

Since I didn't, here goes:

She's not a Disney character (don't sue!), and she doesn't necessarily have a specific costume that would give her away (although she does have some very specific characteristics...I just can't replicate them all):

Tonks (Nymphadora Tonks). She has the ability to change her hair color and nose shape at will. I can't...but I did try to screw my face up into the face that she makes while changing her appearance. Totally works, right?

Character: Tonks from Harry Potter

Outfit:
*Red shirt from Ann Taylor Loft 2008.
*Black sweater/shrug item from Papaya 2010.
*Silver belt was a gift from my Aunt in 2009ish.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I would love to have Tonks's metamorphmagus abilities. How fun to change you hair when you don't like it? Without having to pay? So cool.

Happy weekend!

The Friend Like Me Challenge

Amiee did this character sometime in September. She rocked it, and our friend, Kylie, took her pictures with a fancy shmancy camera. The pictures are fantastic and makes me wish Kylie could come take my pictures (and just visit because I miss her).

Here was my attempt:

I was shooting for this guy:

When Amiee was little, Aladdin was her favorite movie...until the video tape went mysteriously missing (cough...Mom...cough). Before the tape disappeared, we really loved Genie. He's just so funny.

Character: Genie from Aladdin

Outfit:
*Blue top from NY & Co. 2010.
*Blue scarf from my great-aunt.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I realize this outfit didn't involve a whole lot and wasn't terribly creative, but I was very sick and not very unpacked when this picture was taken. I was also in a weird place pants-wise and didn't have a whole lot of options for creative lower-halves. So sorry.

The Grumpy Timepiece Challenge

Continuing my most recent theme from Beauty and the Beast, I did this:

Guesses? My goal was this guy:

Cogsworth the Clock. Have I ever mentioned that I was actually a little scared of Beauty and the Beast when I was younger? I think part of it had to do with the fact that her dad is incarcerated in a creepy castle and that there's a HUGE, furry, unidentifiable beast. Probably.

Character: Cogsworth from Beauty and the Beast

Outfit:
*Brown skirt from Wal-Mart 2009.
*Brown sweater from Wal-Mart around the same time.
*Cami from Francesca's 2011.
*Belt also from Francesca's. I probably got them on the same trip...
*Watch is from Ukraine...probably 2009. It's still kickin'!

Disneybound inspiration board:

I think this is probably my last Beauty and the Beast post. I'm not sure I can think of any other characters that I can pull off in my current state and limited wardrobe options. :) Who knows, though?

The Bookworm Challenge

First of all, this challenge post officially catches me up to date with where I should be in posting. Whew! Secondly, I thought I'd do one in the same vein as the one right before this.

This is my attempt at channeling:

Belle. That very literature-loving lass. Did you catch that alliteration? So literary.

Character: Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Outfit:
*Blue top from New York & Co. 2010.
*White sweater was a gift from Mom.

Disneybound inspiration board:

Sorry that so many of these don't have my pants/skirts pictured. Simple explanation: I was in a weird not-fitting-into-pants-well phase. I'm still kind of in that phase, but at least I now have two pairs of maternity pants. Yay, me.

Images from here and here.

The Ooh Shiny Challenge

To be more Disney-correct, I should probably call this "The Be Our Guest Challenge." But that would totally give it away too quickly, right?

Amiee and I love to sing this guy's part of "Be Our Guest":

Lumiere! He's such a fun character, and as far as clothing challenges go, he's a great excuse to dress up all sparkly.

Character: Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast

Outfit:
*White/gold top from...I don't even remember. I'm pretty sure I got it around 2002 or 2003.
*Gold sparkly tank top...yeah. It might have been purchased on the same shopping trip as the white/gold top, but I honestly don't remember.
*Dangly earrings: Christmas gift from mom and dad 2011.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I really like this one. Hopefully, it won't be forever and a day until I can fit into it again. I'll definitely have to give it another shot!

The Classic Disney Challenge

To compensate for the very non-Disney outfit of Prim, I thought I'd bring back some classic Disney. Here goes:

It's not an exact replica of her, but it's channeling her basic characteristics, I think. Your thoughts?

Minnie. Do kids even know who she is anymore? I hope so, but I know there's about a bazillion other characters floating around out there these days.

Character: Minnie Mouse

Outfit:
*Top from Papaya 2010.
*Scarf from my great-aunt.
*Red earrings from Ukraine. 2009 or 2010. Sometime while I lived there.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I'm sure I could have gotten a little more creative with this one, but let's be honest: I wasn't feeling well and didn't have the energy to sort through all of my belongings. The truth is ugly sometimes. I'm getting closer and closer to getting back on posting track. Hopefully this atones for my really long absence?

Images from here and here.

The Duck-Tailed Challenge

So, technically, this is another of those not-actually-Disney challenges. I just had the clothes for it. :) Here's she is:

Here's another shot that might give her away to anyone who's read the books:

If not, here's a shot of her from the movie:

Primrose Everdeen. She's one of the characters in The Hunger Games series, for those who haven't read/seen it. If you haven't, I get it. It's definitely not for everyone.

Character: Primrose Everdeen from The Hunger Games

Outfit:
*Skirt belonged to my grandmother. I tweaked it's length to better suit me.
*Shirt was a hand-me-down from Amiee when we did our closet clean-out at the end of 2011.

Disneybound inspiration board:

I think Brad got a chuckle out of this one. Maybe I don't make a very good Prim...? Eh. Maybe not. But I had the skirt. :) More to come.

Boswell beach trip 2022: part 1

Just another friendly reminder that I'm still playing catch-up. Clearly, it is not currently July... We made another annual trip to Tops...
